The Children's Society
What sort of projects do the charity support / Where your money will go?
- Projects to offer shelter and get young runaways off the streets and out of danger.
- Projects to give a special treat/day out to a child caring for their infirm parents.
- Programs to help youngsters regain trust in adults after being abused.
- Programs to show youngsters that they can be loved and valued for who they are.
Young Runaways
Youngsters run away from home for many reasons, some for relatively minor problems (many of these return home after a short adventure, realising that home is actually better than what is "out there". Others, however, simply cannot return homebecause of family situations, abuse or parents unwillling/unable to handle the difficulties of bringing up their children. These are at most risk. The Children's Society focus effort on helping these youngsters to get to safety before anything terrible happens to them. They are an important lifeline to prevent a young person from getting out of one bad situation and straight into another (often worse) situation.
Young Carers
We are often surprised by information about the number of young people who are caring for parents, siblings or other family members. Sometimes children are required to provide very intensive care for others due to parental illness, infirmity or other issues. These children (like many carers) often work tirelessly with little or no real respite. The Children's Society look for ways to offer these children some respite and gratitude which may otherwise not be forthcoming.
Abused Youngsters
It is a sad endictement on our society that a small number of children are either phically or emotionally abused at the hands of those who should be the most trustworthy. The Children's Society has a number of programms to help children regain their trust of adults and give them the tools they need to understand how to stay safe in the future.
Unloved Children
It will seem hard to imagine how it must feel to be an unloved child. A child who is rejected by the very people who should be wrapping them in a shroud of love must the the most desperate of souls. The Children's Society can offer sanctuary and learning for those affected through one of its many aid programs.
