My Preparations
Just over a year ago I bought a Harley Davidson motorcycle in the USA to begin my experience build on the US roads. Previously I was renting when I went out but it seemd to make more sense to buy, ride then sell after the event. I started out on a 1999 Softail Heritage Classic which was a great bike to get the basics on. After a few long rides (one to York, Pennsylvania HD Factory) I realised that I would need something more comfortable for the main ride. Late last year I traded for a 2003 Ultra Classic (Electra Glide).
It is clear to me know that this was the right move. It has acres of space in hard luggage and all the comforts of home .... well almost !
So, regular rides with my best buddy, Doug, a small group of good friends and the Seacoast HOG Chapter have given me great insight to the American riding style and what to expect on the roads out there.
I am gradually building my inventory of resources needed for the trip (bunjees, tools, luggage etc.) and getting the bike ready for the big adventure.
Plans are now laid out at work where they will surely (i mean suely) miss me for the 5 weeks which I will be away for, and now it's just a matter of driving up the pledged amount from my very good friends, family and colleagues.
Wish me well . . . or better still pledge some money online to a great cause !
